These events are for innovators who want to apply for funding to work on longer-term sustainable protein projects that will benefit farmers, growers or foresters in England.

Your proposed project should focus on Defra priorities around sustainable protein production. Project ideas should aim to transform farming productivity, environmental sustainability and resilience, whilst moving the sector towards net zero.

There is a total of up to £12.5m available through the Farming Futures R&D Fund – Theme 2: Sustainable Farm-Based Protein competition, which will be divided between Feasibility Projects (total costs of £200k – £500k and a duration of up to 24 months) and Industrial Research Projects (total costs of £500k – £1m and a duration of up to 24 months, with the exception of breeding projects which can be up to 60 months).

Consortia Building

You’ll need a collaborative project to apply for this funding. During the consortia-building event, you will meet other individuals interested in the competition. It’s a great opportunity to meet others you could collaborate with. We’re here to help you make connections with the right people and increase your chances of success.

What are the eligibility criteria for the funding?

  • Projects addressing Defra priorities around sustainable protein production
  • Must be able to demonstrate how the project will benefit farmers, growers or foresters in England.
  • Research and development projects.
  • Collaborative projects including at least one UK-registered business.
  • Projects can be either business-led or academic-led.
  • Feasibility Projects can have total costs of £200k – £500k and a duration of up to 24 months.
  • Industrial Research Projects can have total costs of £500k – £1m and a duration of up to 24 months, with the exception of Industrial Research breeding projects which could have a duration of up to 60 months.
