The award for this competition is supported through the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund (ISCF) and must align with one or more of the following top-level objectives of the Industrial Strategy:

  • Increased UK business investment in R&D and improved R&D capability and capacity
  • Increased multi- and inter-disciplinary research around the challenge areas
  • Increased business-academic collaboration on innovation activities relating to the challenge areas
  • Increased collaboration between younger, smaller companies and larger, more established companies up the value chain
  • Increased overseas investment in R&D in the UK.

The vision for the ISCF Robots for a Safer World Challenge is to:

  • Develop robotic solutions to make a safer working environment in UK industries
  • Increase productivity
  • Open up new cross-disciplinary opportunities.

Single participants or collaborators can apply for a grant up to £100,000 for single participants, or up to £500,000 for consortia of project costs in order to develop R&D projects to advance or develop solutions in service robotics for a more resilient future in areas such as, but not limited to, logistics, healthcare, construction and agriculture, especially where there are new business opportunities.

Competition Scope

Innovate UK is investing up to £6 million to support R&D projects to advance or develop solutions in service robotics for a more resilient future. We are looking for robotic solutions that exploit business opportunities in areas such as, but not limited to:

  • Healthcare
  • Logistics, warehousing and transportation
  • Agriculture and food production
  • Construction
  • ‘General-purpose’ remote working robotics
  • Robotics that can contribute towards the UK’s Net-Zero greenhouse gas commitment.

Your solution should be designed and developed to operate within the constraints of any relevant regulatory environment impacting robotic operations in your chosen sector.

We strongly encourage participation and engagement of end-user organizations as either funded or non-funded partners.

Your proposal must:

  • Clearly identify the operational need(s) and the market segments and sizes that the proposed RAI technology/system will be addressing
  • Identify the precise operational scenario or scenarios that the RAI system is expected to operate if successful
  • Quantify the system’s performance objectives/targets and the TRL advancement you will achieve during the delivery of this project.

What to expect

The RAI team will outline the competition, define the scope and explain the application process.

Following the briefing, event attendees will be able to ask additional questions about the competition.
