Join Innovate UK KTN and the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) for this third webinar of the new ‘Behaviour change & business series’ focusing on behaviour change and its applications for Local Authorities to meet Net Zero.

We will be looking at two ideas from social science. In this recorded webinar, you will hear from experts exploring what motivates people to move towards Net Zero and who are the, often overlooked, “middle actors” who can help Places to meet Net Zero.

What is Net Zero Places Innovation Network?

Innovate UK KTN’s Net Zero Places Innovation Network aims to make Net Zero in the UK a reality. We do this by supporting local/regional authorities and agencies to connect, collaborate, inform, share experiences and lessons learned, adopt innovation and to level up across the UK.

Why should you attend?

This event will give an overview of the Motivations, and the COM-B model of behaviour change, as well as trying to clarify the role of middle actors in the Energy and Buildings sectors.

This webinar is especially relevant to anyone who has responsibilities that can help progress towards Net Zero targets (e.g. decarbonising buildings and estates, encouraging low-carbon enterprise or low-carbon travel) and Local Authorities who are looking for ways to understand and encourage behaviour change.

Agenda and speakers

  • What are middle actors and why do they matter for Net Zero? – Professor Alice Owen ( University of Leeds)
  • Motivations for net zero behaviours, and the COM-B model of behaviour change – Dr Niamh Murtagh (UCL)
  • Discussion – A facilitated conversation with prompt questions for participants to reflect on how you might use these insights in your context e.g.
  • Where can you see that you might use these ideas?
  • Who are the middle actors who can help you achieve Net Zero goals in your area?
  • What opportunities would align with existing motivations to enhance activities on Net Zero?
  • How might you systematically identify opportunities, motivations, or capabilities?
