The Foundation Industries (metals, ceramics, glass, chemicals, paper and cement) produce 28 million tonnes of materials per year in the UK, but in doing so are by far the UK’s biggest industrial polluters: around 50 million tonnes of CO2 per year, or 10% of the total CO2 emitted by UK homes and businesses. If we are to meet our Paris Climate Change Agreement to reduce our CO2 emissions by 80%, a transformational change is needed by these industries in how materials are sourced and processed, and the types of products manufactured. Developing a resource and energy efficient foundation industry will also help anchor production in the UK through increased competitiveness.

To help meet this challenge, the Transforming Foundation Industry Investor Partner programme is now offering the chance for smaller UK-registered companies to access Innovate R&D project funding alongside Investor equity investment.  Our selected Investor Partners will offer equity at least equal to the funding from Innovate, enabling companies an excellent opportunity to scale and grow at pace.  Projects should address the resource productivity or energy performance opportunities of the sector and/or its supply chains.

Innovate UK will offer grant funding for qualifying projects with total eligible costs of £50k to £2m. There is a total of £7m funding available from Innovate UK, which is in addition to the funding from our five Investor Partners. To apply for Innovate funding, you must be invited by one of our Investor Partners.

This is a rolling competition, which opened on April 15th, with applications considered every six weeks. At this launch event, you can find out more about our Investor Partners, and the types of companies that each is interested in investing in.  We will also explain the details of how the programme works, and how you can apply to be part of it.
