Celebrating women in business, energy and industry

Posted on: 03/01/2019

KTN’s Bioeconomy Specialist, Dr Yvonne Armitage, has been featured in a gov.uk blog about women who are paving the way in their fields of work.

A blog¬†series on the¬†gov.uk website has been highlighting the progress that women have been making in the workplace over the last 100 years as part of the Civil Service’s centenary celebrations of the Representation of the People Act which allowed all men and some women to vote for the first time.

For one of their recent blogs, they have interviewed¬†KTN’s¬†Dr Yvonne Armitage about her experiences¬†as a woman working in chemical industries and industrial biotechnology.

Photo galleries are not available for content from the previous KTN website: we apologise for this.

Yvonne highlights how things have changed for women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) since she began her career, with funding and support for female entrepreneurs, and initiative such as the BioLadies Network.

Prior to joining KTN, Yvonne worked for several large chemical companies as a group research manager focussed on the development of cleaner, greener bioprocesses that were less energy intensive. In those days the chemical sector was male dominated, and Yvonne still feels that it is important to to counter the assumption that science is of more interest to boys than girls, by being an ambassador for science.

Ever aware of the importance of role models and mentors, Yvonne says:

“KTN are always looking for inspiring women in companies of all sizes to speak at our events. I‚Äôd like to get more younger female scientists at these events to inspire the next generation.”
