Opportunities in the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU)

Posted on: 05/08/2022

The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a new €2 billion partnership between the European Union and the Bio-based Industries Consortium (BIC) that funds projects advancing competitive circular bio-based industries in Europe. There are currently twelve available open calls with a deadline of 22 September 2022.

The CBE JU builds on the success of its predecessor Bio-Based Industries Joint Undertaking (BBI JU). This Horizon Europe programme was established in November 2021.

Its main objectives are to:

  • Accelerate the innovation process and development of bio-based innovative solutions
  • Accelerate market deployment of the existing mature and innovative bio-based solutions
  • Ensure a high level of environmental performance of bio-based industrial systems

All twelve open calls can be found on the Participant Portal here, and are also listed below:

Cost-effective production routes towards bio-based alternatives to fossil-based chemical building blocks

Co-processing of mixed bio-based waste streams

Maximum valorisation of sustainably sourced bio-based feedstock in multi-product, zero-waste, zero-pollution biorefinery

High performance bio-based polymers for market applications with stringent requirements

Bio-based coatings, barriers, binders, and adhesives

Circular-by-design bio-based materials to improve the circularity of complex structures
