India and the UK share strong economic and social ties. India is the second-largest investor in the UK. As of 2019, Indian companies in the UK generated 48 billion pounds and employed roughly 105,000. The UK is also the sixth-largest foreign investor in India, with a total investment of around US$ 31 billion till September 2021. Both countries also share strong cultural ties, with the United Kingdom having an Indian diaspora population of over 1.8 million.
To take forward the existing research and technology related to the next level to meet the challenges emerging from climate change issues, new policy moves, and technological changes, both countries have agreed to work together to: share knowledge and expertise regarding advanced materials, digital manufacturing, smart supply chain, sustainable manufacturing and artificial intelligence; provide scientific support to policies and regulatory aspects including ethics; and promote dialogue in research and innovation.
