Professor Tavakoli is a co-founder of the Medical Devices Faraday Partnership in 2002 then worked as the Technical Director of the HealthTech & Medicines KTN for many years and continued as a KTM on NHS Infrastructure, Medical Technology and Therapies. Between 1989-2014 he worked as a Technology Manager and Consultant at TWI Ltd, leading on Medical Industry activities. He has developed a range of medical and implantable devices, published over 70 papers and patents.

His key roles are supporting innovations in healthcare and product commercialisation in close collaborations with, Innovate UK, DHSC, NHS, NICE, MHRA, DIT and other stakeholders, including many charities. He has a track record in supporting clinicians/industry collaborations. He has been a member of Steering Committee of many healthcare schemes such as three NIHR MICs. He has also been a visiting Professor of Medical Materials and Medical Devices at University of Strathclyde and also previously at QMUL.
