Russ is the Knowledge Transfer Adviser for the North-West and West Midlands: his area includes South East Cheshire, Shropshire, Staffordshire and South Manchester.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTPs) support businesses to engage with expert academic teams on a project-based collaboration delivering sustainable innovation with positive economic impact and additional societal or environmental benefits.

Russ supports KTP projects in his area with knowledge bases from all over the country as well as his close relationships with local nominated universities. Initially Russ worked for the MOD and the NPL as an Experimental Officer
concerned with projects in munitions and aerospace development while studying part-time for his first degree followed by postgraduate study at University of Sheffield with a period in the US at Northwestern University, then set up an R&D facility in the ICL Manufacturing Division followed by a move to internal line management, finally setting up a international Sub-contracting organisation to purchase manufacturing capacity globally. He moved to Sweden as Sales Director of a Gylling subsidiary (Sweden), then to Scotland in MD roles in Philips/Cambridge Electronics plc. He ran his own business consultancy for 15 years before becoming a contractor to KTP.

He is a Chartered Engineer and has a Masters and PhD degree in Metallurgy, and a Diploma in Management Studies with Distinction. For his work in knowledge transfer he has been awarded Honorary Fellowships by the University of Wales, Glyndwr and the University of Wolverhampton, and an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from Staffordshire University.
