Strategic Portfolio Office (SPO)

The Strategic Portfolio Office supports KTN in achieving our strategic aims by implementing project and programme management expertise, tools and processes that will enable cross KTN working, harmonisation of approach and maximisation of project benefits.

SPO Objectives

  • Working closely with KTN’s Executive team, Finance and other colleagues, SPO will establish and run effective business planning processes for KTN Limited (KTN company plan, approval and de-commissioning processes in accordance with our strategy)
  • Establish, maintain and evolve KTN programme management processes to enable an effective, high-quality organisation
  • Provide dedicated, professional project managers to priority KTN projects (defined below), to enable successful delivery, risk reduction and effective resource utilisation
  • Project manage selected KTN strategic programmes to maximise outcomes and impact
  • Provide support, training and best practice across the organisation regarding project management approaches and associated systems / tools, enriching our staff and empowering teams to deliver successful projects
  • Delivery reporting at portfolio, programme and project level
  • Overseeing the project closure process, to improve quality and client feedback

Purpose of the role:

The job purpose is i) to deliver high quality projects on behalf of the organisation and ii) to support delivery of the Strategic Portfolio Office function.

The role will be based in our Strategic Development Directorate and will work with all directorates across KTN. The role encompasses:

  • Project management of priority KTN projects, to enable successful delivery, risk reduction and effective resource utilisation.
  • Delivery of specific aspects of the Strategic Portfolio Office, including supporting the development of KTN’s maturity in project management practices and project delivery.
  • Scoping and development of project proposals and plans for both internal purposes and in regard to KTN’s business diversification activities, including providing advice to colleagues.
  • Management of project work packages or delivery of specific project tasks, including supporting delivery of projects managed by another project lead.

The role will suit an individual who enjoys delivering a varied portfolio of projects, often being deployed at short notice to provide the necessary expertise to shape, drive and deliver projects. The individual may be involved in several projects simultaneously or deployed for a period of up to six months or more on a single project. As such there is the opportunity to gain significant experience in the full range of activities in KTN and develop an expertise on deploying best practice in project management to deliver demanding projects on time, within budget and to customer expectation.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Delivery of specific aspects of the Strategic Portfolio Office, including supporting the development of KTN’s maturity in project management practices and project delivery
  • Manage priority KTN projects including budget, risk, resourcing and reporting.
  • Planning and designing projects and proactively monitoring progress, resolving issues and initiating appropriate corrective action
  • Maintaining oversight of budgets, monitoring expenditure and costs against benefits as the programme is delivered
  • Managing communications with all stakeholders
  • Ensure programme and project goals are identified – and met – in areas including client satisfaction, quality, and team member performance
  • Management of project work packages or delivery of specific project tasks, including supporting delivery of projects managed by another project lead;
  • Preparation of high quality proposals to secure income from a range of organisations with appropriate level of detail to ensure successful delivery.
  • Expert support to colleagues across KTN in the preparation of their project plans and proposals.
  • Coaching and mentoring of colleagues in application of project management methodologies and tools.
  • Contributing to the development of KTN’s project management toolset.
  • To track progress of projects to determine outcomes resulting from KTN interventions, seeking case studies and metrics (KPI) capture.

Requirements

Experience

Qualifications

  • Degree level or demonstrable equivalent experience in a relevant field
  • Project Management qualification (e.g. APM Project Fundamentals) or demonstrable equivalent experience

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience of delivering projects or programmes to challenging timeframes in a multi-party environment
  • Experience of delivering Project Management Office function(s) within a business environment
  • Experience of working in projects to deliver innovation in a commercial environment
  • Demonstrable financial and budget responsibility for projects and programmesDemonstrated experience in stakeholder engagement, with a good profile and personal network in the innovation landscape.

Desirable

  • Managing remote programme delivery teams
  • Understanding of public funding programmes and/or private finance
