Research Infrastructures

Research Infrastructures are facilities that provide resources and services for research communities to conduct research and foster innovation.

Introduction to Research Infrastructures

Research Infrastructures or RI can be used beyond research e.g. for education or public services, and they may be single-sited, distributed, or virtual. If you are interested in taking part in a project, find out what calls might be right for you. RI grants provide funding opportunities for RIs at various stages in the lifecycle, including concept development, support progressing an RI via the European Strategy Forum on Research Infrastructures (ESFRI) Roadmap, and other projects such as RI services to support thematic objectives or collaborations.

RI projects typically consist of large consortia of partners, from both academic and industrial backgrounds.

Research infrastructure (in the Horizon Europe definition, for purposes of grants) can include:

  • Major scientific equipment or sets of instruments
  • Collections, archives, or scientific data
  • Computing systems and communication networks
  • Any other research and innovation infrastructure of a unique nature which is open to external users
