Substantiating claims about the nutritional and health benefits of foods

Posted on: 10/10/2017

KTN’s Professor Bryan Hanley has been appointed external independent science expert for the ILSI Functional Foods Task Force.

Hardly a week seems to pass without the latest “superfood” or indeed food scare story featuring in the news. Many foods or diets can bring additional benefits to our nutrition, health and well-being, but these claims need to be evidence based if consumer trust is to be maintained.

The provision of science-based evidence for nutrition, food safety, consumer trust and sustainability is one of the key aims of the International Life Sciences Institute Europe (ILSI).

The ILSI Task Force on Functional Foods brings together the best scientists from industry, academia and the public sector to develop tools and materials to scientifically substantiate health benefits of foods. The task force sets criteria, defines how to substantiate benefits, evaluates and ensures that health claims can meet regulatory standards.
