The European Space Agency is launching a programme (“NAVISP”) to develop new industries and capabilities to exploit satellite navigation. The UK is contributing €30m out of the total programme funding of €68.6m, far higher then any other nation. Note that membership of ESA is entirely separate from membership of the EU and Brexit does not affect this programme.

KTN, ESA and the UK Space Agency recently held a briefing and workshop event on this programme, and the presentations are available here.

The programme is divided into three themes:
• feasibility and proof of concept
• competitiveness of industry
• System management and test facilities

NAVISP is designed to promote industry and industrial competitiveness in using satellite navigation, and is aimed at applications developers and system providers and companies outside the traditional the space sector.

The programme is expected to launch in late 2017. We will shortly publish a report from a workshop KTN and ESA ran, to explore ideas for this programme.

KTN will hold further events when the calls are launched – watch this space!

A note for your diaries: KTN is running a free event on opportunities arising from the recent release of all sat nav data from chip sets on mobile device to apps developers. Industry experts regard this as a game changer enabling much higher positioning and navigation performance from mobile devices. Development work on this will in-scope for NAVISP funding. Frank van Diggelen, a senior Goole figure, is flying over from San Francisco to deliver our keynote, and Innovate UK will present specifically on how it aligns with NAVISP. This event will be held on 10th July at Broadway House in Central London. For further details please contact Bob Cockshott.
